Consumer Unit Change

Effective EV Charging - Downtown Electrical

Consumer Unit Change

Your property’s consumer unit is the hub of your electrical system.

It’s where all your circuits are connected to the mains and distributes power around your entire property.

So it needs to work properly if you’re going to avoid any kind of electrical problems.

One wrong or lose connection, one component out of place and you could find yourself in serious trouble.

Changing your consumer unit can be a complicated job, especially if it involves a full fuse board change and unit replacement.

Older fuse boxes don’t have the same overload and leak protection that you find in a modern consumer unit, so it’s essential you have the latest equipment installed to avoid unnecessary safety issues.

Get a consumer unit replacement from a qualified electrician

Changing your consumer unit isn’t a DIY job.

It can be extremely dangerous.

This is why the work should only be carried out by a professional, qualified electrician.

All of our engineers are qualified and NICEIC approved to carry out consumer unit replacements.

If you have an older property or still have an old fuse box, it’s possible it no longer complies with UK electrical regulations.

A qualified electrician can replace your old box with a new consumer unit, which includes better safety features and provide a more efficient distribution of power throughout your property.

How to tell if you have a consumer unit already

It’s easy to check if you already have a consumer unit installed in your property rather than an old fashioned fuse box.

A consumer unit has a clear, horizontal line of black switches known as mini circuit breakers.

Each of one these mini breakers can ‘break’ the circuit running through that connection in the unit, without causing disruption to the rest of the electrical circuits in the property.

Next to this row will be a main breaker switch, which is separate from the other switches.

This will kill the power completely from the consumer unit.

If you already have a consumer unit, you might benefit from an inspection of your electrical circuits to make sure everything is working as it should.

While consumer units are much safer and more efficient than a fuse box, they still require regular monitoring and inspections to identify and fix any faults.

Choosing the right consumer unit replacement

Depending on the type and complexity of circuits your property have, you could benefit from having a different consumer unit installed.

There are three main units to choose from that we can help you choose and install.

  • Main switch unit – has one main switch, which can turn off all the circuits at once.
  • Dual RCD unit – This unit lets you split loads over two sets of circuits. This means you can maintain power in some parts of the property even if the other circuit stops working.
  • High integrity consumer unit – This unit lets you split every circuit independently and is the best solution for commercial properties with a number of machine and appliances operating.

Choosing the wrong consumer unit can be a costly mistake, so get in touch with our experts and we can advise you on the best course of action based on your individual needs.
